NFL Draft analysts have alot of faith in Laiatu Latu
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Indianapolis Colts made Laiatu Latu the first defensive player drafted in the 2024 NFL Draft with the 15th pick in the 1st round.

James Foster and I (Destin Adams) gave out rookie superlatives for the 2024 NFL Draft on our show "The Football Room," and we both shared why Latu should be the favorite to win the 2024 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.

The opening segment of the show (3:15 time stamp in the episode) had both hosts give the player they view as the most likely to win the 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award. Foster went first, and here is some of what he had to say about Latu:

"Traditionally, it's been a pass-rushing award (DROY), and when I look at the top three edge rushers in this class, Laiatu Latu, Dallas Turner, and Jared Verse, I think Latu has pretty clearly the most NFL-ready skill set. You'd have to go back to some of the best pass-rushing edge prospects in recent memory, like the Bosa brothers, to find an edge rusher that has a similar ability to win with their hands coming out of college."

I had the same answer to the question, with Latu being the most likely to win the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year award. And I chose to share more context as to why many view the DROY award as what Foster said was "A pass rushers award.

"Four of the last five defensive rookies of the years have been edge rushers. The last five have been Will Anderson Jr 2023, Sauce Gardner 2022, the only CB on this list, 2021 Micah Parson, 2020 Chase Young, 2019 Nick Bosa. And then nine of the last 14 spanning all the way back to 2010 have come from the defensive line as a whole."
