Mitchell Robinson's return will boost Knicks' playoff hopes

Knicks playoff hopes will receive a huge boost with Mitchell Robinson's impending return

Mitchell Robinson is edging closer to a return from injury. The New York Knicks big man is listed as questionable for Wednesday's matchup against the Toronto Raptors. Mitchell has missed 50 games this season, as he's been recovering from ankle surgery.

Once back on the floor, Robinson will add a new dimension to Tom Thibodeau's team. His rim protection and rebounding will elevate the Knicks' defense toward being one of the best in the NBA. If Robinson can remain healthy throughout the postseason, he could have a major role to play in a potential push for the Eastern Conference Finals.

New York could potentially have Julius Randle and OG Anunoby back in their rotation in the coming weeks. As such, Thibodeau may have a full-strength roster for the playoffs. New York's front office has made multiple moves to strengthen the team this season while Jalen Brunson's production has ensured the Knicks are seen as a legitimate contender in the East.

While Robinson is not a star talent, he is a reliable rim runner adept at controlling the glass and a physical force when setting screens or working in the post. Before his injury, he averaged 6.2 points and 10.3 rebounds on 59.2% shooting from the field. His offensive output could be higher if Thibodeau would allow his team to play through Robinson's lob threat when he is in the dunker spot.

When the postseason begins and the games slow down, having a hulking Robinson protecting the rim will be valuable. He will form part of a stout big-man rotation along with Isaiah Hartenstein. He will also likely come off the bench after missing so much of the season.

Robinson's impending return should significantly boost the Knicks. He could be a swing factor in multiple playoff series.
